Forest for the Trees 

A growing forest of portraits, each tree a singular presence within a shared community. The work invites reflection on our paradoxical ties to nature: intimacy and distance, reverence and estrangement, fragility and endurance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Feminine Nature

A photograph of a landscape crossed by a bridge onto which a line of beauty contestants are a display ritual. Culturally produced ideas about bodies, gender and value come to feel natural. Over a decade, the sashes and naturalistic color disappeared and the landscape became rhythm and movement while the figures retained volume, light and presence. The paintings removed the apparatus of comparison without removing difference. The works trace that change, from recognizable contestants to figures resolving out of movement.
